A good lace wig cleansing alternative that will save you time and money is washing your lace wig unit (yourself) at home. Just peep our quick and simple Lace Front Wig Washing (at Home) tutorial video (above) for a quick how-to lesson.
One of the keys to preserving and maintaining the overall life and condition of your lace wig unit is through proper lace wig washing & conditioning.
Proper and careful lace wig washing cannot be underestimated. Lace wig units are pretty fragile and delicate to begin with, and they are at their most vulnerable state once wet and submerged in shampoo/soap and water. So the steps and methods used while cleansing your lace wig unit should be according to suggested manufacturer instructions. The basic rule of thumb: be patient and gentle while washing your lace wig.
Being tough, rough or overly agitating the unit (i.e., ladies, washing your lace front wig like a you wash your under garments) while washing can cause the hand tied hair knots to slip and/or loosen.
Using the wrong types of shampoos and conditioners can also lead to shedding (over the counter shampoos are usually the wrong pH level and can strip the hair – be sure to use a wig shampoo and/or the suggested shampoos and conditioners for wig cleaning and maintenance).
And, combing the hair of your full lace wig unit while it’s wet is a big Lace Wig no-no!
Also, hot water and using heated dyers to dry your wet unit are also damaging to your unit over time as they add increased stress.
If your not comfortable washing your own lace wig unit on your own, you can have it professionally cleaned. But just make sure the service provider knows what they’re doing. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories from ladies who’ve paid $135.00 for their wigs to be washed & conditioned only to get it back with patches and bald spots all over (yikes!).

Oh dear…. What a terrible shame
The above photos are examples of what can happen to your costly Lace Wig Unit if you fail to treat your lace wig unit with the love, kindness and the proper tools for combing and brushing it so dearly requires.
Just simply using an “average” toothed combed or extremely fine toothed comb on your unit… or a regular bristle brush repeatedly can eventually lead to excessive knot slippage, which results in the shedding, thinning and noticeable balding patches on your lace wig unit.
As instructed on the Love My Lace Wigs™ For Beginners: Lace Wig 101 Page, for daily combing & maintenance, it’s best to use a wide tooth comb (like a shampoo comb) when combing you unit and/or a “Wig Brush” or (“Cushion Brush” with balls at the ends of its bristles) for brushing. These products are available at any beauty store. See images below for examples:
Other causes for Lace Wig Knot Slippage & Lace Wig Thinning/Balding are:
- Excessive roughness while combing/handling lace wig unit.
- Excessive roughness while washing lace front wig unit or washing your lace wig too frequently.
- Combing your lace wig unit while its still wet after washing/conditioning.
- Not combing your full lace wig unit from the tips/ends first and working your way down (especially if your unit is tangled).
- Not air drying your lace frontal unit after washing/conditioning.
- Using greasy and oily haircare products on you lace wig unit (ie. oil sheen).
- Not thoroughly removing the lace wig adhesive from your unit prior washing/combing your lace wig.
- Using hot water on your unit.
- Excessively scratching your lace wig unit in the same spot repeatedly (especially bad for short hair styles that are layered extremely short in the nape/perimeter areas.)
Okay, now having said all this, don’t despair. There’s still hope for your damaged Lace Wig unit. Love My Lace Wigs™ does offer a Lace Wig Repair Service specifically for used lace wigs that are experiencing thinning and/or balding. To learn more, just visit this link.

Hey Divas! Okay. One the most common and constant questions I get asked is “Is it okay to dye my lace wig?”, or “Is the hair on your lace wigs 100% human… can hair be colored?”, or “Will my full lace wig unit get damaged if I dye the hair?”
So to answer the question right off the back, yes. Generally since quality, authentic lace wig units (like the ones available Love My Lace Wigs™) are 100% human hair, they can dyed/colored permanently or semi-permanently, and tinted stripped. But, it’s not really recommended, especially if you’re trying to use a “do-it-yourself” home coloring kit. If you don’t know what you’re doing you may not get the color results you want, and you may even risk damaging the lace/hair on your unit. Here are some points to consider:
1. The Lace Wig Units Have Already been color treated & Dyed.
Sometimes it’s best to leave well enough alone. Since the hair has already been processed to achieve a specific color and/or texture. To give your lace wig unit the longest life possible, it’s best to avoid added stress and processing (it’s a wig ladies, the hair ain’t growing back.)
2. Risk of Altering the Color of The Lace.
Another issue with coloring a lace wig unit is the risk of altering the color of the lace cap base itself. As you know, the closer the lace is to your skin complexion, the more seamless the appearance (which is the whole point of purchasing a lace wig unit in the first place.. So for example, if you’re extremely fair skin and decide you want to color your lace wig unit (especially a darker color), you will end up darkening/altering the color of the lace on your unit, and the lace netting will become extremely visible once applied.
3. Risk of Over Processing Hair on Full or Front Lace Wig Unit Wig.
Again, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But if you must color you lace unit or add some highlights, please take it to a professional hairstylist/coloring expert. Also, if possible, ensure they know a thing or two about the delicate nature of lace wigs, and if they don’t, enlighten them. By all means, let them know how to properly wash, dry, comb & style lace wigs. Also, depending on the how the hair on your lace wig unit was originally treated and processed, it may require more or less time for the desired coloring to take affect.
I once had a customer take a blonde (#27) full lace wig to a salon stylist to add highlights to the unit. She called a few hours later in a tizzy, complaining because the hair wouldn’t strip. I told her to bring the unit back. By the time she brought the unit back, not only was the unit destroyed completely (knots slipped and turned inside out/hair shedding due to the stylist “roughing” up the unit, it looked like an animal), but the hair on the unit did in fact change color (it just took extra time for the unit to change/strip color), and because the stylist didn’t wash the chemical out, the hair on the unit was very dry and over processed once I washed it out.
4. Natural/Unprocessed “Virgin” Remy Hair Texture/Color.
FYI: “Virgin” Remy is a term for all natural hair texture that hasn’t been color or dyed and treated/processed in anyway. These textures tend to be (and are also available on the Love My Lace Wigs™ website) in the Silky Straight (European), natural “off black”-”dark brown” hair color (a natural #1B/#2 mix) (but depending on the source a “virgin” remy is any natural human hair texture – ie. Asian, Brazilian Remy, South American Remy, Indian Remy, etc. Very pretty and very manageable. They’re also more costly to purchase. The Virgin Remy textures may also be easier to dye/strip color from (the recommended lightest color being a light brown/red color).

Meet “Ms. Vicky”. Just one of our newly added Lace Wig Styles for the month of September 2008. Ain’t she fine? She’s bouncy, trendy and “purty”.
Lace Wig Options/Specs:
The texture of the wig in the photo is Silky Straight Indian Remy. The hair color is #1 (jet black). The length is 22″ (so this wig is pretty long ladies, reaching your waist line slightly). The wig cap style/design is “LMLW-2″ (a full lace wig cap – French lace at the front, stretch lace at the crown and ears and French lace at the back).
Cut/Styling Maintenance:
As you can see, “Ms. Vicky” is a long layered hair cut. A very popular cut/style similar to the looks worn by Beyonce Knowles &, Jessica Alba (to name a few) . Prior to cutting and styling this gorgeous Full Lace Wig Unit, we washed it with Kenra Moisterizing Shampoo and Conditioner. After allowing the unit to air dry, it was then placed an a canvas head/mannequin head for cutting/layering, then styled using a 1+1/2 inch Professional “Hot Tools” Marcel Curling Iron with Kenra Thermal Styling Spray for hold.
You can purchase “Ms. Vicky” online (starting @ $350.00 for 6″) at Love My Lace Wigs™
